In 1913, an expedition by Harvard University and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts uncovered a large burial mound at Kerma, Nubia (modern-day Sudan). Beneath it lay a main tomb, surrounded by smaller “Pan-graves.” Inside the main tomb, two massive granodiorite statues were found, depicting Djefaihapi – a nomarch (governor) of the 13th nome of Upper Egypt based in Asyut and a High Priest – and his wife, Lady Sennuwy.
Djefaihapi, son of Idi-aat, was a prominent figure during the reign of King Senwosret I (1971–1926 BC). He is best known for his grand rock-cut tomb at Asyut, a gift from Senwosret I himself, symbolizing royal favor.
